Geo-Membrane

Geomembranes are impermeable membrane liners composed of polymers that are used in Civil Engineering for Geotechnical applications. Their primary function is to act as a barrier to liquids or vapors and are mainly used for lining of covers in liquid and solid storage facilities.

The use of Geomembranes has been on the rise as a result of growing concern over the contamination of valuable water resources. Geomembranes are relatively impervious, compared to traditional porous liners such as concrete, admix materials, clays and soils.

Water Reservoirs and Ponds :

Geomembrances are used for lining of water reservoirs and ponds to prevent seepage of water.

WATER CONVEYANCE (CANAL LINERS) :

Geomembranes are viable alternatives to concrete and compacted earth for lining canals to reduce seepage. They can also be used as an expedient method to repair existing deteriorated concrete linings.

EARTHEN DAMS :

Geomembranes can be used as full or partial linings in earthen dams and storage reservoirs and also in the remediation of ageing concrete dams and spillways. In addition, water inflated tubes fabricated from Geomembranes can be designed to block off streams and create reservoirs or control downstream water levels.

SOLID WASTE CONTAINMENT (LANDFILL) :

The primary purpose of a liner in a landfill is to protect the groundwater from being contaminated. Geomembranes are resistant to most wastes and exceed the requirements of impermeability of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. Landfill application include liners for waste containment, leach ate collection and closure caps.

CAPS & CLOSURES :

The use of Geomembranes in landfills eliminates the generation of waste liquid after filling the landfill. The cap is also designed to trap and properly vent the gases generated during decomposition of organic waste. Besides, the completed cap allows for efficient revelation and restoration of the land.

LIQUID CONTAINMENT (POND LINERS) :

Installing lagoon-lining Systems in wastewater treatment plants helps prevent contaminants from entering ground water sources or streams. In addition, the use of membrane liners in potable water reservoirs conserves millions of gallons of water annually by preventing seepage loss.

MINING APPLICATIONS:

The use of flexible Geomembrane liners prevents contamination of soil and ground water from chemical solutions used in mining. Geomembranes are also used to recapture and recycle the solutions along with the extracted precious metals.

SPILL OR SECONDARY CONTAINMENT :

Tank farms are lined to prevent ground water contamination in the event of chemical spill. Geomembranes are also used to protect simple earthen impoundments and dikes.

SPECIALITY CONTAINMENT APPLICATIONS :

Geomembranes help protect ground water by providing secondary containment for underground storage tanks, and are also used in radon and methane barriers, containment booms, foundation moisture barriers, erosion protection, tunnel waterproofing, tank interior linings and ground water cut-off walls.
